Forget ‘bucking it out’ or lunging until they are tired. Discover the 9-step framework that actually prepares your young horse for the saddle mentally.
Because the traditional way of starting horses under saddle doesn’t prepare them for when the saddle goes on or for when the rider gets on.
The traditional method relies on letting the horse ‘buck out the tension’ or to make him physically tired to force submission.
These techniques lead to very stressful situations, creating behavioral problems and traumas that are incredibly hard to fix later.

A common belief is that starting a young horse is a job exclusively for professionals. Many owners send their horse away for a month, hoping it comes back perfectly trained.
But here is the truth: The essence of a good start isn’t just about getting a rider on their back. The ultimate goal of the TRT Method is teaching your horse how to self-regulate their own tension in scary situations.
By taking charge of the preparation before you get in the saddle, you equip your horse with a system to process stress.
So, even if the professional getting in the saddle doesn’t work according to the TRT method, your horse is already immensely prepared mentally.
The first step is that you teach your horse to become relaxed in his body. You do this by going through a groundwork pattern.
In the second step you teach your horse to find this relaxed posture in the presence of something that would normally give your horse stress.
When your horse understands the groundwork pattern and the tools, you can introduce the girth as the next tool.
The next step is to introduce the saddle as a tool. You apply the exact same principles.
How to make sure your horse is able to move with the saddle in a relaxed and confident way.
How to introduce the bridle without stress and for your horse to feel comfortable with the bit.
How to prepare your horse for when you get on and give your aids from a different position.
The next step is to get on your horse without your horse getting tense or nervous.
The final step is to have your first ride and be able to go in all 3 gaits.

I’ve worked for more than 30 years with a LOT of horses. From wild horses in Australia to the sensitive warmbloods in Europe.Â
I’ve worked with horses from different disciplines, breeds and ages and they all had one thing in common…
They could all learn to feel confident and relaxed.
