Rubbing your horse's skin

When the weather gets colder, your horse’s skin can sometimes feel tighter, making him a bit more sensitive and itchy.

Before you ride, instead of trying to calm your horse down, try stimulating his body by giving his skin a good rub.

This helps your horse feel the connection between his skin and body, providing a physical warm-up. That way, you can avoid trotting around hoping he won’t explode.

Mobility exercises

Before getting on, I like to incorporate some simple mobility exercises while standing still.

This helps your horse feel more mobile and warmed up, rather than starting in a static, chilly state that can lead to tension or an explosive reaction.

It’s a great way to prepare his body and mind for a calmer ride.

Moving the front legs

On colder winter days, one of my go-to exercises is working on the mobility of the front end by moving the front legs from a distance. I focus on being able to direct the front leg exactly where I want it to go.

I always start slowly, building up gradually to create more energy and movement. Not only does this help your horse feel mobile and ready to work, but it’s also a great way to warm yourself up in the process!

Mental stimulation

During the colder winter months, when we often spend more time indoors than outside, I find it important to provide horses with mental stimulation.

This is a great time to introduce them to new things and obstacles, especially when they’re feeling fresh.

It keeps their minds engaged and helps channel their energy productively.
