We’ve all been in the situation of a horse not wanting to go near a certain part of the arena. It can be the scary corner, the door or the sun spots on the ground.
Either way, if handled in the wrong way, it can lead to a lot of tension and bad patterns.
In this blog, I show you step by step how I handle a situation with a horse being suspicious of the corner and not wanting to get close.

First of all, this can happen with every horse no matter how quiet and easy going the horse normally is. Every horse can have moments in which they feel insecure.
So don’t be surprised when this happens with your horse. Even if you think it’s silly your horse finds a chair in the corner scary.
Our horses perceive our human world in different way than us and are born only to survive in nature. We bring them into our human world and they will, at first, rely on their natural instinct when they encounter a situation they are suspicious of.
So, it’s completely normal behaviour.
Second, when this happens and your horse doesn’t want to go past a certain part of the arena, there are a few things you want to avoid doing.
What you don’t want to do
I often see riders trying to force their horse to go past the scary corner. Even though this might work for some horses that just need a little bit of encouragement, this approach often doesn’t work with more sensitive horses.
You’re basically adding more pressure in a situation where your horse is already feeling too much pressure. As a result, your horse will build up even more tension.
I often try to explain the situation by comparing it with having a large spider on the wall. If you’re afraid of spiders and someone tries to push you towards the spider, you will only try to get away even more.
It’s the same with our horses.
There are also two other mistakes we often make, which you can read about in the blog: ‘3 mistakes we make when there’s a scary corner’.
I also explain why you don’t want to force or push your horse towards the scary corner in this video with my young horse Don:

[av_textblock size=’17’ font_color=” color=’#ffffff’ av-medium-font-size=” av-small-font-size=” av-mini-font-size=” av_uid=’av-1bjyldm’ admin_preview_bg=”]
What do you want to do instead?
So you don’t want to push or force your horse into the scary corner, but what can you do instead?
Basically, there’s an area before the ‘scary spot’ where your horse will feel comfortable and where he wants to be. It’s in this space where I let the horse work.
As soon as I feel the horse wants to take the inside rein forwards towards the scary spot, I do nothing and let the horse get closer towards the scary corner.
It’s at this point you’re trying to teach your horse that the scary corner is actually a place of rest in which he doesn’t have to work.
In the video below I show you how I do this with Don.

[av_textblock size=’17’ font_color=” color=’#ffffff’ av-medium-font-size=” av-small-font-size=” av-mini-font-size=” av_uid=’av-1bjyldm’ admin_preview_bg=”]
It’s not about letting your horse get used to it
What’s important to note, is that it’s not about letting your horse get used to the scary corner.
It’s not about standing still in the scary corner and letting your horse have a look at it. Hoping that he will start to feel comfortable.
Instead, it’s about the self-management of the horse.
It’s about teaching your horse how he can manage his own body when he feels there’s pressure.
By teaching your horse to change his posture when there’s pressure, he will also start to relax mentally. Because a relaxed body will lead to a relaxed mind.
I therefore did the groundwork pattern outside of the ‘scary spot’. Even though it’s considered ‘work’, it’s also teaching the horse to get into the right posture.
I talk more about it in the following video.
